Our fellow heart mama, Terri, is going to change the insurance industry for everyone!! She got us an interview with a CNN reporter for tomorrow. They are doing an hour long special about insurance!!! Why us you ask.?? Well, what a story we have to tell. The parents of two healthy boys, then...to find out we're pregnant with a third boy that has a heart defect and DiGeorge Syndrome. This is shocking considering we're both healthy, non-smoking, non-drinking, non-ANYTHING kind of people....that just wanted to have another healthy baby. Now, 5 heart caths, 1 stomach surgery, 2 open-heart surgeries later...three weeks before Christmas...the AWESOME dad of our household gets fired from a job we've been with for almost 10 years. Now, Isaac has appointments with a specialist almost every week. He needs mouth surgery this spring, he will need another heart surgery at some point, AND his t-cells are low and we'll find out next month if he needs to go to California for bone marrow studies. So, we are out of insurance as of January 1st. Hopefully, we'll find out how much Cobra is this week..BUT, without a job...How do you pay for Cobra?? We will be SURE to tell CNN our entire story...the good and the bad...and I'm SO GLAD that they realize the need for such stories to be told.

NOW...that being said...I have to CLEAN my house and get some sleep....We need to look fresh for the cameras tomorrow!!! (well, as fresh as you can when you're waking up every 3 hours to start a feeding pump, change a diaper, or pat a little bum to sleep).

It makes me sick to my stomach and ache for you all.

I pray to God that he blesses your family with another job ...
and good health insurance for your wonderful family.

I pray for that sweet baby Isaac that will need so much medical care.

I love you guys so much.

I thank God every day... all day....

and ESPECIALLY after reading this...

that my husbands wonderful employer did not abandon us when we needed them the most.....

they stepped up to the plate
and provided a higher lifetime cap ... not only for us ... but for every single police officer and their family....

they saved the life of our baby as far as I'm concerned.

I'm so sorry you guys have this to deal with, on top of having an already hectic bunch of things to deal with. Things will work out somehow, they always do. I'm excited to hear how the interview goes! Good luck!

I can only imagine how hard this can be. Have you talked to an insurance broker?

I do not know what the laws are in your state but in California, it is important that you do not let someone without medical coverage for more than 63 days...because at that point, insurances can decide to not insure that person anymore and state funds become your only option at that point.

I read your blog and admire your courage and fighting spirit.

I wish you and your family the very best.

Kathy,

good luck with your interview! In the meantime, just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in your troubles... we've been there and done that also, even with lack of insurance... so I thought I'd offer a few tips for continued coverage for Isaac.

we found out from our hospital that our daughter was eligible for ssi (DiGeorge diagnosis also). With lack of income ie. unemployed, you should have uninterrupted services.

Once Dad is working again, Nevada does have the Katie Beckett Waiver, which is a federally funded program- medicaid for kids with special needs but without regard to family resources... here's a link I found...

good luck, keep us posted!!

P.S. If you can get your service coordinator or social worker to help you apply for SSI, and then once approved (they will do retro-active coverage) Isaac would automatically be covered by medicaid...

That's phenomenal Terri!! I fully agree insurance companies in America (we are one of few that have it backwards) need to be under investigation. I have allot to say on this matter. Having worked for several and understand all the politics..it just sickens me. Yes these companies (not all) but a great deal do not care about what is going on in our family lives (which is funny when I read things like work/life balance) I better stop before I get someone angry but I do understand where you are and hate that you have to experience it! Hope your interview went according to plan and I'm just gonna call you cause there's too much to say on this darn thing!!! Kisses Kisses and more kisses to all your little angels and hugs and kisses to the parents of these little blessings. Hope I didn't offend anyone...just a concerned friend with a voice :-)
